USE OF THERMAL UNDERWEAR

Thermal underwear is perfect for winter sports, hinking, jogging, hunting, fishing, whilst on duty, at the shooting range, outdoors or for casual winter activities - simply whenever we need to stay warm and breathable.

Thermal underwear will make sure you stay comfortable during both physical or passive activity, both in colder or warmer temperatures. We choose the most suitable combination of functional clothing with respect to what activity we want to perform as well as to which season of the year it currently is. With that in mind, we choose the most ideal number of layers. Very importantly, it is essential to always use the right number and combination of functional underwear so that the whole set remains breathable.

FUNCTIONAL THERMAL UNDERWEAR - WHAT IS IT MADE OF

One of the main aspects that ensures the correct functionality of thermal underwear is the material it is made of. As such, functional clothing is usually made of synthetic fibres or combined materials that contain a variety of fibres. These fibres absorb the moisture that we produce during physical activities and wick it away from the body. For instance, thermal underwear made of Merino wool and MOIRA are excellent at doing exactly so it is no surprise they have both surged in popularity in recent years.

The fibres essentially transfer excess heat to ensure an optimal body temperature. This is the main function of the first layer, which is worn directly on the body and which increases our thermal comfort. This will ensure that during demanding physical activities our back will not sweat and our body is not going to overheat. Thus, it allows the body to better maintain its natural temperature.

The key to ensure the most effective functionality of our thermal underwear lies in the correct layering. It is very important to keep in mind that a poorly chosen second or third layer can interfere with the functioning of all layers.

LAYERs of THERMAL UNDERWEAR

  • The first layer of thermal underwear should be comfortable, stretchable and breathable in order to ensure comfort and moisture wicking. It must fit the body well so that it can effectively wick away heat and moisture whilst providing breathability.
  • The second layer of the thermal underwear is most often worn over the first layer. We use it when we need to move the thermoregulation point higher - i.e. when it is rather cold out there. The first layer takes heat away from the body and transfers it to the second layer. The second layer itself is often made of synthetic hollow fibres. The hollow fibres heat the air and thus keep the body warm. Excess heat is, of course, again transferred away from the body - just like the first layer.
  • The third layer is another layer that increases the overall thermal comfort and acts as a covering and protection against external elements (such as rain and wind) and against mechanical damage. As the third layer we usually opt for membrane, softshell or fleece jackets.
