Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson founded the Smith & Wesson Company in Norwich, Connecticut in 1852 to develop the Volcanic rifle. Smith developed a new Volcanic Cartridge, which he patented in 1854.
Smith & Wesson has written a history of firearms, with development and innovation continuing into the 21st century. Today, in addition to weapons and accessories, S&W also offers other means of self-defense and outdoor equipment.
