These thermal underpants are used as the second layer of the ECWCS (Extra Cold Weather Clothing System).

The first layer is usually some sort of thin thermal polyester clothing that wicks sweat well. This is followed by a warmer thermal underclothing, the so-called second layer, which is already warmer and further transfers moisture away from the skin. Various fleece materials are used as a third layer.

Of course, it is not always necessary to add more layers - often two layers of thermal underwear are already sufficient.

The ECWCS was developed for the US Army to enable its soldiers to function and fight in adverse weather conditions. The complete equipment allows it to function in temperatures as low as -51 °C. Although you may not be planning to get to those temperatures, it's always good to be backed by a high quality equipment of the ECWCS kind.
