In the US ARMY it is used in the 10th Mountain Division, in this unit it is the traditional designation of the best specialists for tactics and combat in the mountains. Ceněný odznak armádních specialistů a horských záchranářů, nejen v Evropě.

Das Edelweiß. Odznak "Alpská protěž". Tradiční označení německých vojsk s výcvikem v horském terénu. Od dob Německého císařství, tedy nějak od roku 1870. V těchto zemích tradiční dříve.

V současnosti používán u horských jednotek v Německu, Rakousku, Švýcarsku, Lichtenštejnsku a Slovinsku.

V US ARMY je používán u 10. horské divize, u této jednotky je tradičním označením nejlepších specialistů pro taktiku a boj v horách. Tedy všude, kde je nadmořská výška více než jedna míle (1609 m).

Původně byl ceněnou kořistí, Desátá horská v roce 1945 vyčistila sever Itálie, tedy Alpy od Němců.
- Prodávané provedení (MIL-TEC) odpovídá aktuálnímu německému armádnímu odznaku, nosí se na polní čepici, nad levým uchem, stonkem dolů a květem dopředu nahoru.
