How to choose food for travel

Maybe you are going out on the water with friends, with kids under the tent, maybe you are going to conquer Mt. Everest or you want to have "something to stock" in the cottage if you fall into the snow.

How to choose food for travel

A five-star restaurant or equipped kitchen does not await you at the end of each trip. In more demanding conditions outside the comfort of home and civilization, it is not easy to supply the body with energy, saturate and possibly warm. Above all, practical travel food should be durable and must not require complex preparation.

But how to choose the right food for travel? What food is better - canned, MRE, dehydrated or sterilized one? There are many food brands on the market that use different food processing technologies to make them durable and practical on the way. We have prepared the following overview for you to make it easier for you to choose your food on the way.

Freeze dried food

Freeze drying (so-called lyophilization) gives the food two great properties: long shelf life (5 and more years) and low weight. The food is thus suitable for long-term storage or for long hikes or expeditions, when you do not expect to buy on the way, you need to carry all the food with you and you care about every gram in your backpack. On the contrary, the disadvantage is that you need to have access to drinking water, because without water you simply cannot get food. Ideally, the food is poured with hot water, in an emergency it is possible to use cold. This category is represented in our offer by the Tactical Foodpack brand.

Pros:

  • low weight, suitable for longer hikes
  • compact, does not take up much space
  • suitable for long-term storage, shelf life of 5 years or more

Cons:

  • drinking water must be added
Sterilized food

The sterilization process is actually nothing more than common canning. Thanks to modern materials, we are no longer limited to heavy cans or jars, but you can also buy ready-made food in special bags that are light, compact and durable. Food prepared in this way has a long shelf life and you can store it for a relatively long time. Another advantage is that in case of emergency, the food can be consumed immediately, because compared to freeze-dried one, it already contains water. This also has its disadvantage, because food is a bit heavier. In addition, you can heat the food in hot water directly in the bag or with the help of a heating capsule, so you don't even need to start a fire. This type of food is represented by the Czech brand Adventure Menu, that offers many types of food also known for their great taste.

Pros:

  • no need to add water
  • can be heated up or consumed immediately
  • shelf life of two to three years
  • space-saving
  • many different variants

Cons:

  • higher weight
MRE (Meal Ready-to-Eat)

The MREs from various manufacturers are in the gear of many armies as an emergency dose of food for a soldier. It is a complete meal consisting of, e.g., canned food, various butters and pastry, but it can also be accompanied by disposable knife and fork or seasonings. There are many MRE variants, they are represented by the Arpol brand on our e-shop.

Pros:

  • verified by armies in the most demanding conditions
  • many different variants
  • ready for immediate consumption
  • other useful supplements such as coffee, a wet wipe, matches or chocolate

Cons:

  • higher weight
  • more waste
Canned food

We must not forget the classic cans. Today, moreover, there is no need to limit yourself to the famous lunchmeat, but there is a much wider choice. In cans, you can buy, e.g., ready-made soups, various types of goulash, meatballs, burgers, sausage with cabbage and much more. You can find a selection of military cans from Arpol on our e-shop.

  • many different variants
  • ready for immediate consumption
